About Williston Vermont

Williston is a beautiful agricultural town surrounded by hills, plains and valleys. The town center continues to grow every year with new buildings and renovations to existing ones. Despite this change, the town remains surrounded by open fields and beautiful scenery. Some of the old farming fields have been retired over the years and are going back to forested areas.

One of the earliest settlers of Williston was Thomas Chittenden, who was elected Vermont’s first governor in 1778. In the 1800’s Williston was a major center for the railroad. The Williston Historical Society has grown and continued their efforts to preserve buildings around town. They recently were successful in preserving the last one-room school house in the area.

Many manufacturers are also located in Williston. IBM, the major computer chip manufacturer in Essex Vermont, recently built a manufacturing plant in Williston. The area is a good place for businesses to locate because of its close proximity to Burlington, the airport, and Interstate 89.

Recreation

There are several recreational areas in the town of Williston. Catamount Family Center provides cross-country skiing in the winter and a golf course and other facilities in the summer. Lake Iroquois, which lies partially in Williston, is popular for swimming, fishing, and boating. Also located in town are several parks including the Mud Pond Conservation area with 158 acres of wetlands and surrounding forests for hiking and walking. The Williston recreation board organizes numerous summer programs for children and adults alike. Specialty and sports camps are available for a variety of skill levels and ages.
